All 9 teams were present and accounted for in good time and we even managed to tee-off a little early. The weather was fine and the course fairways were excellent and even though a majority of the greens had been sanded it did not seem to bother anyone if we look at the excellent results on the board. With nearest the pins on all par 3's they did seem to be difficult to get on and we were advised that the pin positions were in the most difficult zones. That did not seem to bother Christian & Roger on the front nine or Jayjay & "Smiley" on the back nine who all won nearest the pin prizes. The winning teams on the day were: 3rd Place going to the "Aussies" - Graham, Garry, John & Dave with a Gross 73 Net 61(Also tied with Gross 75 Net 61 was Frank's team but they were not in the comp due to qualifying rules: 2nd Place going to "Lost Souls" - Kieran, Len, Keith & Noi with Gross 75 Net 60; and the overall winners on the day were "The Pissheads" - Don, Jeffrey, Jim & Ted with a Gross 71 Net 58. An honorable mention goes out to Jack's team with the lowest handicap of 8 who equaled the winning teams gross score but were beat out of the prizes on handicap.
Thanks goes out to Gold Canyon Golf Course for the Special Discounted Rate and to all the committee for organising a great day and to all the participants for making it a successful and enjoyable day all round.

Gold Canyon Monthly Away Game
We will be travelling away to Gold Canyon on the 19th September 2013 for our next monthly away game.
It will be a 4 person Scramble event so organize your teams and forward them by email to your committee or club captains.
Please organize your transport to arrive at the golf course at least half hour before tee-off time of 9am.
Gold Canyon GreenFee/CaddyFee/Walk 600baht
or GreenFee/CaddyFee/Cart 1000baht each.
SCRAMBLE RULES:
1. Each team will consist of four players. Each team will be given a handicap using the ambrose method.
2. All Players tee-off on each hole.
3. The nominated team captain then selects the best drive and marks the position (within 6 inches) with a tee peg (not nearer the hole). A minimum of three tee shots per player are to be used excluding the par 3 holes. Each players drive is to be marked on the score card.
4. The other players then retrieve their balls.
5. The player whose drive has been chosen does not get to play a second shot. The remaining 3 players play within six inches of the tee peg (not nearer the hole).
Note: Golf balls shall be placed on closely mown areas and dropped if the chosen ball in play is in the rough or a hazard.
6. The above method of play is followed until the green is reached. There are no restrictions after the second shot. All players play third and successive shots until the green is reached.
7. On the green the same method applies. The ball chosen is marked by a putter head length and players putt from the same spot in turn until the ball is in the hole.
Note: If a player putts to the edge of the hole and then taps it in without giving his team mates a chance to putt then that score counts.
8. The score is the total number of shots from the chosen spots (including the tee shot).
At the end of the round the total for each hole is added together and the team handicap subtracted to give the team net score for the round. The winning team will be the one with the lowest net score.
All other rules of golf apply to the "Ball in Play". In particular please be aware that the committee has decided to exclude Rule 14.2. Team members are not allowed to position themselves on or close to an extension of the line of play or the line of putt behind the ball for our club scrambles only and subject to the agreement of individual team members.

Green Valley: Thursday 15 August 2013.
There were 30 golfers up at the crack of dawn to make their way to Green Valley for our regular monthly away day. Most had no trouble finding their way in the dark but there was one who shall remain nameless who had GPS and still managed to by-pass the course. No matter, all were on time for a 7:22 start in an individual stableford competition. The weather held off and the first nine was played in pleasant although humid conditions with cloud cover but by the second nine the cloud had broken up and we copped the full force of the sun and humidity.
The course was in fine condition especially the greens although after all the recent heavy rains the fairways were a bit wet in parts giving very little or no run. No excuses though, as young Willie came in with a gross 82 which was a really great score on the day and although not in the comp Frank gifted him one of the new club shirts which were put on sale after the event. The ladies also had a particularly good day as well.
The Winner was Pranee with 39 points. Runners-up were Dao & Inthira with 36 points although Inthira had not played in the past month and therefore was not in the comp. Third place was another tied score with Richard & Christian coming in with 35 points. Christian particularly loved the greens and was putting extremely well on the day. Most players joined in the buffet at the clubhouse after the event to complete an enjoyable day. Thank You to all concerned.

24 members made the short trip to the Royal Chiang Mai Golf Course for our Monthly Away game in todays "2 Man Best Ball Net Score" format.
We started 15 minutes before our scheduled time all from the Tee Box of Hole #1.
The weather cooperated by providing us with nice cloud cover throughout the whole competition with only slight drizzle.
Royal was in the best shape we have seen it in a while. The fairways are in great shape and the greens (putting on the slow side) were receiving good shots very well. The majority did not loose any Balls, which is always a good sign.
As to the Winners of todays event, coming in tied for a second place with a Net Score of 66 were the Teams Peter Hadden (aka Smiley) / Mike Neun and Lennart Larsson / Richard Brown.
The first place went to Allan Gariano / Gary Cooke with a stunning net of 61.
Congratulations to the Winners and Runner up. Well played.
The Committee want to thank all participants for their continued support of the Chiang Mai Social Golfers.
Back in the Club house the Service and food were excellent.
Please be advised that for every twosome going to Royal Chiang Mai Golf Course the offer of Baht 1.500 including Caddy and a shared cart will be valid all the way through October 31, 2013.

Royal Chiang Mai GC July Away Game
The Monthly Away Game will be held at Royal Chiangmai GC on the 18th July 2013 with an 0830 Tee-off.
The event will be a two ball better ball.
Better ball works this way: The two players on the team each play their own golf ball throughout the round. On each hole, the two team members compare scores, and the lower of their two scores (the better ball, in other words) counts as the team's score. Example: On the first hole Player A scores 5 and Player B scores 4; "4" is the team score for Hole 1.
Green Fee/Caddy Fee/shared Cart: 1500baht.

Gassan Khuntan 13 June 2013

There were 35 members who made the trek south 60+ kilometers down the track to the beautiful Gassan Khuntan Course for one of our quarterly Scrambles. All were early to arrive on a beautiful day and keen to get started. With groups going off both front and back tees most had completed their rounds in approx. four hours. Back in the clubhouse there were many sad tales of missed birdie putts as usual but the majority enjoyed their day on the course. Many would rue those missed birdie putts though as when Frank announced the team scores There were 3 teams tied for first place and 3 teams tied for second place. Only 3 prizes were distributed for nearest the pins and they were won by Frank Schwarz, Prajat Bacchi & David Urlwin.
The winning teams with a net 60 were:
Peter Haddon, John Barrett, John Dalton, Dave Stephens
Rob Lassig, Garry & Jayjay Walker, Peter Brown
Frank & Yui Schwarz, Corky Wood & Ben Faipoung
The runners-up with a net 61 were:
Roger Mack, Tom Berger, Alex Stewart, Dave Cameron
Don Bishop, Ric Cameron, Peter GB, Keith Taylor
Jack Cooper, Lesley Mullen, Yung Beece, Alan Marson
A big thank you to all members who attended the day and to all the committee for organizing the event.

Gassan Khuntan Thursday 13 June 2013
The June monthly away game will be held at Gassan Khuntan on the Thursday 13 June 2013 with an 0830 Tee-Off from both front and back tees. The event will be a 4 Ball Scramble. Please ensure you are at the course with fees paid no later than 0800. It is about an hours run straight down the highway towards Bangkok with the turn off to the golf course on the left in the hills just before Lampang.
On some holes it is a long walk from the green to the next tee so carts are recommended. Carts are allowed on the course and not restricted to the pathways.
Entry Fee into the competition 100 baht each.
Green Fee/Caddy Fee 800 baht
Green Fee/Caddy Fee/SHARED cart 1000 baht each.
Green Fee/Caddy Fee/cart 1200 baht each.
All teams will have a handicap which will be deducted from their gross team score at the end of the game to give a net result. The handicap system used will be the Ambrose method.
Definition: "Ambrose Competition" is another name for a scramble, but one in which a team handicap is used. All players tee off, the best shot is selected and players hit again from that same spot. The best second shot is selected, and all players hit from that same spot, and so on until the ball is holed.
If the scramble is called an "Ambrose," it means that handicaps are used in play, with a fraction of the total handicaps of the group members serving as one handicap for the group.
For example, if it's a 2-person scramble, the handicaps of the two players are added together and divided by 4. For a 3-person scramble, divide by 6; for a 4-person scramble, divide by 8.
The arithmetic produces one group handicap which is used during play.
Also Known As: Scramble, 2-man scramble, 3-man scramble, 4-man scramble
Each player must use three of his/her drives on the 14 par 4 or 5 holes and indicate on the score card which hole their drive was used. As there are four persons who must count three drives each (12 drives) in a team that will leave two holes/drives for the captain to decide.
The person whose drive is counted must mark his ball with a tee and the other three players must place their ball near the tee to take their teams second shot. The person whose drive was counted cannot play a second shot, it has to be one of the three other players. There is no restriction on third or fourth shots, any team members shot can be counted.
The four par threes have no restrictions. Any team members shot can be counted.
Once you are on the green and the best ball is chosen, it is to be marked and all four players will putt from that position. Each player will putt in turn and once the ball is in the hole that score will be counted. In other words if you putt a ball up to the edge of the hole for one and then tap it in without giving your team mates the chance to one putt then the score stands as two putts. So even if it is on the rim, mark it and give you team mates a chance at a one putt.
Local rules apply for ‘out of bounds’ and ‘lost ball’ all other rules are as per the Royal and Ancient Rules of Golf.
Prizes will be dependant on the number of golfers and therefore will be advised before play. The usual nearest the pin prizes.

Alpine: Thurs 16 May 2013
19 members arrived on an extremely hot day for a round of golf at Alpine. It turned out to be a very rough day and I am only one of many who would like to return to Alpine and play it from the fairways. There have been many comments about the rough at Alpine and I can confirm that none of these comments have been exaggerated. The green staff were at work on the course during our game and it seemed that they were cutting the rough back.........WONDERFUL!
Despite the difficulty of the course, narrow fairways and extremely thick rough, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and it is always nice to visit Alpine GC. We had 2 members of the 19 managing to play to their handicaps and score 36 points, hats off to both Jeffrey and Ric Cameron. Taking joint second with 33 points were Allan and Ken, well done to you both.

Gassan Khuntan: Thurs 18 April 2013

Thirty (30) members made the away trip down to Lampang to try their skills at the Gassan Course in a 2 Ball Best Ball event. The hot season had some calling for earlier tee-offs and we did actually get away earlier than our scheduled 9am slot albeit only by 20 minutes. On a virtually empty course we were allowed to go off both 1st & 10th tee boxes, both intimidating holes for the first shot of the day. The course gave some the appearance of being easy although it must be said that these were the ones who managed to stay on the fairways because those who strayed even just a little found the going quite difficult. Fairways and Greens were quite good and most enjoyed the course. The distances between some greens and the next tee were quite long and it is definately a course for using a cart which thankfully were allowed on the fairways. Still a long day with the drive down and a five hour round for most groups. The winning team on the day was Ken Nalder & Steve Jepson(62), runners-up were Pranee Buckley & Prajat Bacchi(67), third place going to Gerry Brimacombe & Lesley Mullen (68) all scoring under par rounds. Well done Everyone.
Note: The manager informed us that from next month (May) the walk in price at Khuntan is Green Fee 500 baht Caddy Fee 300 baht.

International Challenge Gold Canyon 21 Mar 2013
A total of 48 golfers travelled down to the Gold Canyon Course with only one managing to get lost on the way. All 12 teams managed to get away on time with 6 off the front and 6 off the back nines. While visibility was low due to mist/smoke it did cut down on the heat for at least 9 holes. The course while starting to brown off was mostly in good shape, the greens had been cored and sanded but as they only did half of each green and placed the flags on the uncored half it did little to upset play as the scoring on the day indicates. It appeared that we were the only ones on the course and all groups completed their rounds in just over four hours.
There was some extremely good scoring on the day with the long driving of some individuals being described as 'Gorilla's in the Mist' and also with some very close 'nearest the pins' but unfortunately this time no 'holes in one'. Chip in birdies it seems were shared by most teams. The winners on the day were 'Team Wired' (Wales,Ireland,England,Denmark) Keith Taylor, Keiran Savage, Mr.B.Lucassen & Len Sparrow with a Gross 68 Net 57 with the runners-up being Awesome Australia Gross 68 Net 59 and G-Bag (Great Britain) Gross 70 Net 59 and Team USA & Team Asia tied but just out of the prizes.
The Nearest the Pins were taken out by Paul Coppens, Yung Beece & David U-S who were presented with an empty bottle of soda water each due to the fact that our treasurer, who it seems is showing early signs of ageing, forgot to bring along the prizes however he did promise to make good with copious quantities of wine and golf balls for the winners in due course.
From all reports everyone enjoyed the day and it only remains to thank not only all those who participated on the day but especially the committee for all their work on a job well done.

Doi Inthanon Thurs 21 Feb 2013

There were 31 starters for todays Individual Stableford Competition at Doi Inthanon. 29 playing for prizes and 2 playing a social round having not qualified under the new handicap club ruling of having played one round with the club in the preceeding month. Unfortunately we were informed that Ken had a motorbike accident and would not be able to make it, we hope he is ok and also one other no-show out of the 33 intended players. The weather was fine for the start of the event but got very humid early in the round. Some confusion at the start as the golf course had advised us that we would all have to go off the tenth tee but come tee-off time after Lesley & Gary had done a great job of getting all the groups organised the starter advised us that we could also go off the first tee ... All that aside, this is Thailand after all, we did all get away on time after a little confusion with four groups off the front and four off the back and therefore some of us had no right to make excuses for not making it past the ladies tee on the first.
The course was looking good but not as good as it has been in the past, especially the bunkers but the greens were very enjoyable. Jack Cooper was having a brilliant round until he got to the 9th hole where his drive ended up hitting a caddy on the 2nd tee box which set him back in points and baht (get your golf insurance now). All the scores were entered on Lesley's laptop and after a few wayward scorers were informed of their errors on the card the overall winner on the day was Tony Guardino who despite a slow start came home with 38 points. Lesley has assured him that a mask will be compulsory attire for his next round at Maejo. The runners-up in a four way tie were Jack Cooper, Jack Kuzina, Jerry Buckley and Richard Brown with 34 points.
We thank everyone for their patience both on and off the course and for their participation in what we hope is an enjoyable atmosphere and hope to see you all again in the very near future.

I have also been advised that with the "50% off voucher" the cost of green fee/caddy fee is 1100baht" if you are going to walk the course. If you want a cart you have to pay extra. I have some 50% off vouchers if anyone wants one please advise ASAP (garry_walker70@hotmail.com).

Mae Moh: Thurs 17 Jan 2013
Click on link to photos:
On a beautiful day down south at Mae Moh 32 die hard golfers turned out despite warnings of multiple temporary greens to find that yes, they have ripped up many of the greens but if you examine the scores for the day you will see that it cannot have been all bad. The picturesque Par 3 10th hole was out of play but replaced by the 19th Island Green. They also reduced the green fee caddy fee to 350baht. Two person teams teed off in 4 groups from both the front and back nines in a 2 ball Best Ball Competition.
The winning team on the day consisted of Barry Ochitwa & Alan Gariano with a Net 58. Tied in 2nd Place were 2 teams consisting of Mark Morris & David Urlwin and Corky Wood & Ben Faipoung with Net 59. Also Tied in Third Place were teams of Ken Nalder & Jim Lockhart and Nat Sriwanlord & Jayjay Walker with Net 60. It might be mentioned at this stage that Mark Morris had a brilliant individual round with Net 63 certainly the best on the day.
There were 3 Nearest the Pin prizes given out and the lucky winners were Gerry Brimacombe, Ken Nalder & Jayjay Walker. All in all a great day out but with the major work being carried out on all the greens it will be a while before we get down that way again.
