Mezzanine Scramble 13 Dec 2012

Link to Photo Album

The final scramble for the year which could be called the Johnny Walker Black Label Classic this year was held on the new Mezzanine Course where 12 teams were in the competition for the final event of the year. Only one no show which was disappointing for the team involved. The round which was an early start for us began with an 8am shotgun start as previously advertised (but there are always a couple of latecomers making the usual excuses) but fortunately all teams got away on time and completed their round in just over four hours. As always the results were close with a shot separating most teams. For all the results: Scramble Results. Most people enjoyed the course and the social activities afterwards. Admittedly the new club struggled to keep up with the food/drink orders with all the groups finishing at the same time but at the end of the day most were satisfied with the overall event. Well done to the committee and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Winners: Mike & Dizzy Reeve, Marisa Poakkonen, John Barrett.
Runners-up: Frank & Yui Schwarz, Corky & Ben.
Rob Lassig, David Stephens, Rene Bacchi, John Noyes

Nearest the Pins: Frank Schwarz, Dizzy Reeve

Koolpunt Mezza Nine Scramble

The December Scramble will be held on the new Koolpunt Mezza Nine Golf Course situated in the Koolpuntville 9 residential estate at Hang Dong. As usual we will be using the Ambrose System to determine team handicaps. Choose your own team but if you do not have a team submit your name and the committee will form a team for you if sufficient numbers. Due to the fact that this is a 9 hole course and we have a shotgun start we are limited to the number of teams (possibly 10 or 11) and hopefully it will not be necessary to restrict numbers.

Please be at the course registered with Frank in the entry lobby and your green fees etc paid no later than 7:30 as you will have to head out to your tee-off hole by 7:45 for the 8am shotgun start. If you do not have your own drinks I would pick up some water from the starters box  near the first tee before you venture out as the drink stops around the course may not be open early. Take an umbrella as it is a new course and there is not much shade out there.

The usual entry fee of 100 baht per person (400 baht per team) applies. There will be a prize for "Nearest the Pin" on the two Par 3 Holes. Nominate your team captain who will be responsible for ensuring the team score card is completed correctly, duely signed and handed in immediately on completion of the round, also responsible for making all team final decisions on the course. Please make decisions regarding which ball you will play quickly and clear all greens immediately on completion of final putt.

Date: Thursday 13 December 2012

Tee-off:  Shotgun Start 08:00

Green Fee/Caddy Fee: 750 baht

Green Fee/Caddy Fee/Cart: 1100 baht

Gentlemen will be off the BLUE TEES (6200) & Ladies will be off the WHITE TEES (5528)

Anyone intending to have breakfast (please be there extra early) I can advise that the American Breakfast consists of Orange Juice, toast & jam, eggs (done to order), sausage, bacon, ham, tea or coffee and costs 180 baht.

Notes:
1. Distance markers on the course in the centre of the fairway are small domes coloured blue-200, yellow-150, white-100 for those of you in carts a line is painted on the cart path same colours as above as the centre of the fairway is sometimes not visible from the cart path.
2. Keep it down the middle because there is water left and right on most holes and sometimes crossing in front of the greens as well. If there is no water left you can bet its OB. If there is a hill at the back of the green or on a bend in the fairway then there is a good chance there will be water behind the hill. If you hit across the water onto another fairway on most holes it will be OB.

Mae Mo Scramble - September 13, 2012:

We had another successful away match as (40) members participated in a team scramble at the Mae Moe golf course. Everyone arrived on time so the event started as scheduled on a somewhat overcast day. As the round progressed the skies closed in and we were all hit with a downpour of rain that lasted around (30) minutes. It rained so hard that one par (3) green was completely saturated with water making putting extremely difficult to impossible. After the rain stopped we finished the round under sunny, hot and humid conditions.  As the result of the rain coupled with group of (6) in front of us it took 5 plus hours to complete our match.  Regardless, most, if not all players, enjoyed the day at Mae Mo.

Relative to the scoring results, first place honors went to the team of Brendan Tanham, Dan Evans, Dave Robertson, and Captain Gary Lyons posting a most impressive score of (3) under par gross (67) with a net score of (56). It should be mentioned that (2) members of this winning team Gary and Dave also won closest to the pin par (3) awards.  Second place honors with another impressive round of golf went to the all ladies team of Pranee Buckley, Prajat Bacchi, Jumjim Walker, and Chawinee Ongsakul shooting a round (1) under par for a gross score of (69) and a net score of (57).  Third place today with a gross score of (1) over par (71) and a final net score of (59) goes to the team comprised of Ben Faipoung, Corky Wood, Frank Schwarz and Jack Kuzina. In addition, the Gary and Dave from the winning team the other (2) closest to the pin par (3) holes were Jack Cooper and Lesley Mullon.
Congratulations to all the winners and thanks goes out to all the members for making this another successful event.

Mae Moh - September Away Game

The Monthly Away Game will be held at the Mae Moh Golf Course on Thursday 13 September 2012. It will be a slightly later tee-off time of 09:30 due to the distance required to be travelled by all and to allow for those who manage to get themselves lost. The Event will be one of our most popular quarterly held Scrambles. The system used will be the Ambrose System, that is, the total handicaps of the four team members divided by 8. It is a bit of a drive so you may wish to organise car/petrol sharing as it is a wonderful course and well worth the effort. Members select their own team and once confirmed by all in your team advise club captains and pay team entry fee.

Team Entry Fee: 400 baht
Green Fee: 100 baht
Caddy Fee: 200 baht
Cart Fee: 600 baht (can share 300 each)
Nearest Pin Prize on all Par Threes (must be on the green)

Gymkhana - Thurs 9 August 2012

With Overcast skies and light showers falling 18 keen golfers turned out at Gymkhana to find that we had the clubhouse & golf course all to ourselves. By tee-off time it was just the occasional spot and hardly enough to justify an umbrella. All 6 groups tee'd off on time with the first group finishing the 18 hole round in 3 hours. The course although wet after the overnight rain was in fine shape with recently mowed fairways and greens in excellent shape and holding. The only complaint heard was that a few of the bunkers could do with some more sand.

It was expected that as all were playing off Chiangmai Golfers handicaps on a short Gymkhana course that some high scores would be the order of the day but with wet conditions on a tight course with plenty of trees this was for the most part not to be and the greater majority either played to handicap or there about. The one notable exception was the days winner Noi Taylor with 40 points and whose skill was witnessed on the third hole when she managed to bounce a ball safely on the cement pathway and across the water, now that is accuracy. Runners-up came in the form of a three way tie, Pung Bacchi, Len Sparrow and Garry Walker each with 36 points. Apart from Denis Dixon who claimed a Net hole in one there were no other highlights to the round. Forgetting the golf for a moment it was a lovely walk in the park with enjoyable company and followed by a relaxing lunch and liquid refreshments

Gymkhana - 9 Aug 2012

Unfortunately, with what is considered a small turnout for our Monthly Away Game it was decided unfair to expect the Gymkhana club to close the course for our group and also insufficient numbers to have a shotgun start. So we will all tee-off from the first tee in the groupings now posted beginning at 08:30.  Please be at the golf course by 0800 and checked in no later than 0815 having paid your 100baht competition entry fee. Dependant on the situation at the golf course it may be possible for groups 5 & 6 to go off the 7th tee if it is clear and if they desire to do so.

The event is a Stableford event using Chiangmai Golfers Handicaps. Any guests or members without current handicaps will be marked using the 36 system of handicapping. Score Cards are to be exchanged within your group, must be legible and signed by player and marker as correct and handed to the committee immediately at the completion of the round.

At this point in time their are no exceptions to the rules of golf apart from where appropriate  'drop zones' may be used otherwise play the ball as it lies or in accordance with the rules of golf. Should this change it will be announced just prior to Tee-Off.

Gymkhana Golf Course 9th August 2012

The August Monthly Away Game will be held at the Gymkhana Golf Club on Thursday 9th August 2012 with an anticipated tee-off time of 0830 all members to be present and accounted for by 0800.

Green Fee + Caddy Fee: 400 baht

Anyone wishing to have a practice round prior to the day of the event can get the price listed above if signed in by a member.  For those who are interested, some Chiangmai Golfers who are members  (Garry, Nigel, Len to mention a few) play there regularly on a Monday, Wednesday &/or Friday teeing off at 0830 and will sign you in for a round.

The event will be an Individual Stableford Event.  After committee discussion and input from members it was decided that the course is too difficult and the weather too unpredictable for a limited club event.

If you wish to play in this event please get your name to club captains or committee members ASAP or prior to the 3rd of August when the event will be closed off. It should be mentioned that this is only a 9 hole course and if we get more than 36 golfers the event may be closed off earlier and if so, it will be "first in first served" as far as competitors go.

Today at Royal Chiang Mai we had 27 Members and one guest playing at our July 2012 away match. Everyone showed up on time and there were no delays to get the round started. We went out in 7 foursomes on both Tee # 1 and Tee # 10.

The Golf Course was in great shape, the greens were very fair and the ball stopping well on the good approach shots. The weather was more on the warmer side with the Sun out most of the day and no Wind until the last couple of holes.

One group had a special tee off happening when Jack Cooper was in his down swing his Ball fell of his Tee and he hit only the Tee which lifted off with a funny sound and landed about 20 yards in front of the Tee Box but his ball did not move an Inch forward. Jack finished his swing with a complete follow thru just to realize that he had to do it all over again.

After the round we met in the "Club Room" were we had a nice cold 30 Liter Keg of Leo waiting for us. The Service was excellent and the food was great as well.

We want to mention that Khun Noi the Marketing Director of the Royal Chiang Mai Golf Course, she was the key person for us to make sure we had a most enjoyable day at their facilities. A special thanks go out to her with a promise that we will be back.

As to the Scores. We noticed that the course was playing much more difficult than other courses we play in our weekly games hence we had only three Players scoring over 36 points. Minor Placings were Third Place with 34 points Rob Lassig, second place with 37 points Jerry Buckley. The Winner with a total of 39 points today was Lester Twigden who by the way was the last one to arrive this morning. We have to revise the phrase "the early Bird catches the worm".

Congratulations to the Winners, well done and well deserved. For more information on the Scoring please have a look at the Handicap Page.

On another note we had some slow play today and the Committee received a formal complaint which we will follow up on but at this time we are asking all players, that

IF THE GROUP BEHIND YOU IS PLAYING FASTER THAN YOU THEN YOU HAVE TO LET THEM PLAY THRU. That is provided of course that the slower playing group has at least one clear
hole in front of them. There should absolutely be no discussion about this rule as it is Golf Etiquette.
So to everyone out there, next time let a faster playing group or groups play
through and help make it more enjoyable for everyone.

ROYAL CHIANGMAI STABLEFORD EVENT JULY 12

The next Monthly Away Game will be held at Royal Chiangmai Golf Course on thursday 12th July 2012. Tee-off Time will be 9am and as usual we ask that all competitors be at the course and registered at least half hour prior to Tee-Off.

It has been decided that it will be a Stableford Event due to the fact that many of our members have not played the course and those who have played it have done so infrequently and so to be fair to all on a challenging but excellent course a Stableford Event will be the order of the day.

Green Fee/Caddy Fee: 1200
Cart: 700 (can be shared for same price, 350 each)

We will be presenting the winners and dining in an air conditioned room in the clubhouse - A'la'carte no buffet - but there will be one keg (30 Liter) of Leo available to all players for no additional charge.

June 7, 2012 Away Scramble - Green Valley:

Link to Photo Album: https://picasaweb.google.com/chiangmaigolfers/GreenValleyScramble7June?authuser=0&feat=directlink

Another great turn-out with (12) teams for a total of (48) members traveling to Green Valley to play in one of our scheduled team scrambles. All our members arrived on time so we basically kept to the scheduled tee times and competed our round in approx. (4) hours.  The weather was perfect and none of our teams experienced any lengthy delays as  the starter staff at Green Valley did a great job. Also, all aspects of the lunch were excellent from the selection of food to the service of the waitress staff.

As for the golf results the team of Noi & Keith Taylor, Len Sparrow and Kieran Savage took 1st place
honors with a net score of (60). We had a tie for 2nd place today with a score of (61) being shared by
the teams of ( Gary Lyon, Dan Evans, David Urlwin-Smith, Paul Coppens ) and the team of ( Peter Brown, Marisa Paakkonen, Lennart Larsson, Barry Walls ). 3rd place today with a score of (62) was shared by (3) teams. Closest to the pin awards for all the par 3's were won by the following members, Pranee Buckley, Gerry Brimacombe, Dan Evans, and Rob Lassig. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all the members for making this another great day of Golf!

A message from Don Bishop:
"As a new member of CMSG I would like to thank the organizers for another great away game today at Summit Green Valley. I know that I speak for all participants today. The course was in great condition, the format was friendly, the food and on-on excellent and the organisation was simply superb. This does not just happen - it takes a lot of work and here's to Frank, Jack, Christian, the (2) Gary's and rest of the team for a job well done. Thank you."

Green Valley Scramble - 7th June 2012

The next monthly away game will be held at Green Valley on the 7th June 2012 Tee-Off 7:57am.
All teams to be assembled and paid up at least 30 mins prior to Tee-off. Tee-Off will be from both 1st & 10th Tee Boxes.

It will be the second of our quarterly Scrambles for 2012 and will consist of 4 person teams using the Ambrose system of handicapping i.e., The teams four individual handicaps totalled up and divided by 8.

Usual Scramble rules apply. All four members tee-off and then select best ball. Person whose ball is selected does not play 2nd shot, remaining three players play second shot. No restrictions for remaining shots. No restrictions on par 3 holes. Once on the green best ball selected and all players putt out in turn, as soon as the ball is in the hole that is the team score. If you putt to the edge of the hole, mark it and give your partners the chance to one putt. All four team members must have 3 drives each counted and not counting the par threes that leaves two drives at the teams discretion.

Names of those wishing to play will be posted as received and teams will be posted after the team is fully paid up.  If you do not have a team the committee will endeavour to place you in a team if there are sufficient numbers on a first in first served basis and remaining odd numbers will have to miss out. This time there will be a close off date which is the 5th June. No names will be accepted after this date unless they are a complete team of 4.

Prizes will be awarded from the total fees received for 1st, 2nd & possibly 3rd for Lowest team Net.
Also the club will donate Nearest the Pin prizes on all four par threes.

Green Fee/Caddy Fee: 1050 baht
Competition Fee: 100 baht (members only)

We will be dining after the game in the clubhouse where the prize presentation will take place.
There is a buffet available from 11am - 2pm for 150 baht for those who finish early enough and wishing to partake or there are the usual a la carte choices.

Prices may be a little dearer than outside but if we expect to get deals from these clubs we should use their facilities and not just play and run away.

Alpine - May 10, 2012 Away Match:

To view photo album click on link below:
https://picasaweb.google.com/chiangmaigolfers/AlpineMay112012?authuser=0&feat=directlink

Today we had record number of (44) members and (4) guests participating in this months away match
at Alpine. Everyone showed up on time so all the (13) groups teed off on schedule on an extremely hot day.  Thankfully, the starter allowed some of our groups to start on the 10th tee which resulted in our last groups not having to wait an hour to tee-off. The course was in excellent condition accept for
the fairways being a little wet from the previous evening rainfall.

Today we had a tie for 1st,2nd,3rd, & 4th place. Sharing 1st place honors was Peter Brown and Rob Lassig both posting an impressive score of (43) Stableford points. 2nd place went to Pranee Buckley and Phylis Miles both playing in the same group and scoring (37) points each. It should be noted that Steve Jepson also finished with (37) points but did not enter the competition. 3rd place honors were shared by Marisa Poakkonan and Guy Merrett both coming in with (36) points. Last, but not least, and coming in 4th place was Frank Schwarz and Len Sparrow with (35) points each. Hats off to all of today's winners!

After the golf we all traveled to the Samkam Phaeng Lake View Resort for an enjoyable lunch coupled
with even more enjoyable beers!

Thanks goes out to all the members for making this another successful away match!
